Conflict is something most people try to stay away from, but in reality, conflict in life is unavoidable, particularly at work where differing opinions lead to potential problems that can threaten to block productivity. Conflict resolution strategies must be considered if you want to stay on the trajectory that leads to reaching your company’s goals.
It doesn’t seem like “positive conflict” would be two words that fit together, but in the workplace, conflict can lead to positive outcomes. For example, when competing ideas appear to be on a collision course, conflict is probably inevitable, but inspiration can be the end result.
Innovation comes in many different forms and conflict happens to be one of them. It may not be the preferred method, but people don’t always see eye-to-eye, so take advantage of it when it happens. Innovation occurs because conflict presents a situation where people look outside the box and to less conventional ways of thinking. New ideas emerge from what might closely resemble, if only briefly, chaos.
Relationships evolve over time. Those that are never strained fail to evolve at the same rate. A disagreement doesn’t have to bog down the relationship to such a degree that the two parties fail to communicate long term. Rather, a disagreement can push the communication to new levels where a stronger bond is eventually made.
With robust conflict resolution strategies, you can better handle situations that might otherwise get out of hand and become messy. The strategy serves as a guide where empathy is encouraged, defenses are lowered and a dialogue opens up.
Conflict may not be the best way to improve morale in the workplace, but it can happen that way. Rather than jumping on the problem and coming to an agreement, the gripe festers and the employee becomes unhappy and productivity drops.
Conflict can be a path to fixing what’s broken, but it has to begin with great communication on the part of leadership. Good leaders are empathetic and they are excellent listeners. When an employee has a problem, a good manager is going to see it and make a connection. This makes the employee feel valued and that they have a team of people working with them who care about their satisfaction.
